My involvement with Labradors started in 1974 when my husband, Sandy and I got our first Labrador Retriever and she was a great pet. Our second Labrador came from Sandy Briggs at Wimberway Kennels. “Shazam” a wonderful yellow bitch went on to get her Show Championship, Utility Title, Obedience Trial Championship and Working Certificate Intermediate.
I have been breeding labs since 1979 using the “Pinebank” prefix. The dogs used for stud and breeding have their hips and elbows cleared and their eyes checked annually.
Pinebank Kennel is a small kennel in Puslinch, south of Guelph, Ontario where pups are raised on 92 acres of land with TLC having four ponds for their swimming pleasure. Pinebank Kennel was granted permanent registration statis with the Canadian Kennel Club in 1985. I like to work with my Labradors so they need good conformation, their eagerness to please helps in Obedience and their natural desire for bird work helps in the field.
Pinebank Labradors are seen in the conformation shows, obedience trials; Hunt Tests, working certificate tests, good Canine Citizen Tests, Rally O trials, Tracking Tests, on posters, TV ads, movies, print ads, Browntrout calendars, address books and note pads.
Marie Sawford has used Pinebank dogs in her Obedience and Rally O books. Pinebank Kennels is also featured in “The Canadian Dog Owner’s Companion” by Donna Davidson and Penny Manning. Robert Bateman’s print ”Winter Companion” “Soames” Ch Shazam’s Sasha at Pinebank, is one of our boys that Robert and Birget owned.
I also give beginner classes for people interested in Working Certificate Tests and C.K.C. Hunt Tests. I also give private lessons for obedience and problem solving in obedience. I teach for Marie Sawford at Companion Dog Training, we have also done Obedience Camps together and I am honoured to act as Marie’s coach.
Marie Sawford and I have written articles for Front and Finish, an American performance magazine. I have also written articles for Dog Sport Magazine and at one time wrote articles on pet obedience for the Oakville Beaver Newspaper.
I am a C.K.C. judge for all three levels Working Certificate Tests, Junior and Senior Hunt Tests and Rally O. I also judge NAMBR Obedience trials.
Sandy and I are Life Members of the Labrador Owners Club and the Hamilton Dog Obedience Club where I have held the office of President in both clubs. In the LOC I have been Hunt Test and Obedience Chair and Bulletin Editor and with HDOC I have been a Director, Training Director and Head Instructor. With the Labrador Retriever Club of Canada I chaired a National Specialty.
I was the Secretary to the Canadian Master National Club, one of the founding members of the executive working to get the club and title recognized by the C.K.C.
Over the years I have put 60 Obedience Titles, 18 Championships, 65 Field Titles and 24 Rally O Titles on dogs in Canada. the U.S. and Bermuda. I feel it is important to breed an All Round Labrador who is moderate in size with a good temperament, will work in the Obedience ring , and retrieve birds and be a great pet for the family to cuddle with.
